Loved and Lost by Martina Caffrey Shannon

This is a painting I did when a person I loved very much told me he did not feel the same. The tree in the painting represents me. I wanted the tree to look like its trying desperately to cling to the last leaf, representing my hope that this person would change his mind. The tree is almost reaching out to the leaf which is what I saw my self doing to this person. The cracked surface represents how heart broken I was and how everything in my life now seemed barren and dry without him. It is a sad painting and it really represents a life without love. But there is also hope because, with time, these wounds heal like the tree in the spring, and the pain lifts and a new heart is born, and like the tree, when it grows back in the spring fuller and stronger so too does my heart, having had time to heal. I am now stronger and a better person from having loved and lost..

  1. Martina, prior to reading your explanation of this beautiful painting, it has already, giving me profound feeling of lost love and this what gave a powerful message of your art using dark color for the tree, texture as cracks in the background with bale colors to convey such tender feeling accompanied by hope. The empty big tree is watching the only one lost falling upside leave but ultimately will produce more. Well expressed and thank you for participating, I’ve enjoyed viewing your artwork.

  2. Thank you for your submission Martina! Before I read your comment about the painting, I sensed deeply something precious and ancient. The cracks in the work add to the sense of antiquity. Yet the simplicity of the single red leaf is a call to honor that which is passing. Now that I have read your comment, I hope my comment is of use to you and I thank you for your honest sharing! Even in the leaf as it falls is a sense of hope for the Spring that will come. This is a marvelous art work and I look forward to viewing more of your creations in the future!
