Tranquility and Aftermath by Stephen Kaldor

The Ancient’s world-view recognised 4 elements: Earth,Air,Water and Fire. My country Australia is the most ancient of all the continents and we witness the continuous struggle and renewal of these regularly. “Tranquillity and Aftermath” presented here as a diptych, though it is not strictly so; they are of different sizes on different grounds. ‘Tranquillity’ is a studio painting and ‘Aftermath’ is a sketch painted on the spot. They were, however depict the landscape in a National Park near Sydney, where I live a few months apart. ‘Tranquillity celebrates the first 3 elements and ‘Aftermath’ shows the result of the 4th,Fire. I still remember the smell of the burnt bush and rotting vegetation mixed with the sight of regeneration, the cycle of Life.

  1. “Tranquility” is a beautiful landscape with technical expertise and much appeal for the viewer. It has a good color balance and a mellow rhythm that permeates a sense of well being. As a work of art it works as an intro to “Aftermath” but does not match the vitality and newborn energy of “Aftermath”. The play of light, the color contrasts and overall composition expose a freshness in your creativity that makes it such a fine masterly work. A vibrant rhythm and crisp feeling of emerging life is evident throughout the work.
